The Flying Antelopes defeated Ikorodu City 2-1 in Lagos to win the 2025/2026 NPFL season, finishing one point ahead of Rivers United. This triumph marks their second NPFL title in three seasons and solidifies their position as one of Nigeria’s most historic football institutions.

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has spearheaded an ambitious agenda, focusing on various sectors including sports development. His administration’s dedication to innovation and excellence has been a significant factor in the club’s resurgence.

Under Governor Mbah’s leadership, Rangers have entered a new era of success, culminating in their ninth league crown. The club now stands level with Enyimba as the most successful club in Nigerian league history.

The government’s strategic investment began with assembling a competent management team, led by FIFA and UEFA-certified football administrator Amobi Ezeaku as CEO and General Manager. Accomplished coach Fidelis Ilechukwu was retained to head the technical crew, ensuring stability and professional guidance.

Infrastructure also received substantial investment, including the completion and upgrading of the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, known as The Cathedral. These improved facilities, along with enhanced welfare packages, have fostered an environment where players and officials can excel.

While celebrating this domestic success, Rangers International F.C. head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu issued a critical warning regarding continental competitions. He stressed the imperative for Nigerian clubs to retain experienced and quality players for successful participation in CAF tournaments.

“You need quality and experienced players to compete in Africa,” said Fidelis Ilechukwu (Head coach of Rangers International F.C.) on May 26, 2026.

Ilechukwu highlighted that the constant departure of top talents from Nigerian clubs significantly weakens teams on the continental stage. This trend of players moving to leagues in countries such as Tanzania, Ghana, and Zambia is a major concern for Nigerian football.

“Player exits are affecting Nigerian clubs badly,” implied Fidelis Ilechukwu (Head coach of Rangers International F.C.) on May 26, 2026.

“We lose too many important players,” noted Fidelis Ilechukwu (Head coach of Rangers International F.C.) on May 26, 2026.

The experienced tactician emphasized that continuity and squad stability are essential for clubs aspiring to consistently challenge in CAF tournaments. Building strong continental teams becomes difficult when key players frequently leave.

“You cannot build strong continental teams when key players leave constantly,” added Fidelis Ilechukwu (Head coach of Rangers International F.C.) on May 26, 2026.

Despite domestic achievements, Nigerian clubs have struggled to make deep runs in CAF interclub competitions in recent years. Ilechukwu remains convinced that enhanced player retention could significantly bolster Nigerian football on the African continent.

“Nigerian clubs have the talent to compete,” stressed Fidelis Ilechukwu (Head coach of Rangers International F.C.) on May 26, 2026.

For the Rangers coach, the message is clear: retain experienced players, build stronger squads, and prioritize continuity in club development. Continental success demands quality, stability, and long-term planning.
